Portrait Drawing / Portrait Painting
This is a very flexible ongoing private class that is limited to one or two people at a time. It may be held in the student's home/studio or at my studio in Deltona. It may be held with or without a live model depending on various factors.

I specialize in teaching basic "classical" skills that will form a foundation that the student can build on. I tailor my lessons and instruction to match the student's level of skill and personal artistic goals. If the "goal" is not yet known, that's fine too. The content, pace and density of instruction is fully adjustable. This flexible method of instruction centers around learning measurable, objective skills. This is similar to the way Ateliers used to teach aspiring artists. Learn how to achieve a likeness, to draw what you see, to mix the color you desire and to do so deliberately, not by accident. Learn how to compose the painting, prepare the canvas and prepare your work space for maximum results. Once you are armed with these basic skills you can move confidently in any artistic direction you want. Do you want to paint from life? Do you want to paint what you imagine rather than what you see? Good. You will be in a much stronger position to do so with your basic skills and you will benefit from these skills for the rest of your life. Do you feel as if you have hit a plateau despite your investment in lessons, classes, workshops and books? Maybe all you need is some personal attention. If there is a gap or a weak spot in your knowledge, then we will identify it. Then we will strengthen it so that you can move forward.

Portrait drawing and painting is very challenging to learn. It's also challenging to teach, since teaching is an art form in itself. This is compounded by the fact that most art lessons and instruction is intended for a general class or audience, not an individual. Still, the basic methods can be learned. With time and effort you will see a dramatic improvement in your work. As your skills improve I will make recommendations on where else to study. The journey is never over. Don't wait until you think you're good enough to take this basic course. Your current skill level is not nearly as important as your state of mind, your enthusiasm and your desire to improve your work.
YOU are the vessel.

Regarding Models and Modelling Fees:
Many basic skills can be taught without the use of a model - without painting from life. However, painting from life is the most effective learning tool of all for the aspiring portrait artist. When you are convinced that this course of instruction is for you, then you should find a way to paint from life. I can provide advice on this subject and help you hire a model, if needed. You could reasonably expect to pay a portrait model $20 per hour in central Florida.
